This year has been a strange one. And since many areas are still under some form of stay-at-home guidelines, Halloween will be mostly virtual this year. But that doesn’t mean it has to be boring! Here are some fun ways to spice up the spooky season while still being safe.

1. host or attend a virtual Halloween party 🎃💀

Parties in 2020 are mostly virtual, and we’ve gotten pretty good at learning how to use technology to connect during the pandemic. Check out these tips on hosting a party yourself, or find an online shindig so you can dress in costume and meet new friends.

2. deck out your home, apartment, room, etc. 🕸🦇

It’s Halloween! That means your living room can become a place for the dead (and undead) to hang out.  Or transform your front yard into a graveyard. It’s time to exercise those creative muscles and spook your place up. It’s not just for others, it’s for you, too. (Tip: sidewalk chalk is a great, non-permanent, and inexpensive way to show your spirit for the season.)

3. play eerie sound effects and songs 🎵🧟‍♂️

Liven up the evenings leading up to Halloween and the scary night itself with creepy music and sound effects. We may not be able to go to haunted houses, but we can scare ourselves with these songs and sounds.

4. host a scarrrry scavenger hunt 🔎👻

Hide items in your yard, home, or common areas and put your kiddos to work finding them. Invite a few socially distanced friends to participate, or make it just for your “quaran-team.” Here are some tips and ideas for hosting your spooky haunt hunt.

5. prepare frightening foods and dreadful drinks 🍸🩸

Pumpkin spice is nice, but eyeballs in your drinks and blood on your cookies are a better fit for the spooky season. Here are some eerie eats and ghoulish guzzles to make your 10/31 way more fun.

6. binge spooky TV shows and scary movies 🤡👽

Check out all the classics and new releases from streaming platforms (or check local listings for broadcast shows). Most of these, except for YouTube, require subscriptions. Also, the author would like to suggest a couple of personal favorites for the spooky season: Stranger Things, Ghostbusters, and Beetlejuice (not a paid endorsement.)

Happy haunting! 💀🧟‍♀️☠️🎃🩸🕸🦇🕷👹🙀
